Microplastic pollution is an emerging environmental concern and includes items such as plastic pellets, vehicle tire erosion, and, until a recent ban in the UK, found in personal care products (microbeads).
Microfibers are those released directly into the environment as small particles (size less than 5 mm). Although often included in discussions about microplastics, microfibers can be synthetic or natural and are shed from carpets, curtains, and other household textiles, as well as clothing.
At Rab, we recognize the severity of microfibers in the environment and have material experts actively engaged in ongoing research. We are members of The Microfibre Consortium, an industry-led body that aims to address the microfiber challenge through strategy, integrity, research, and product development activities. There is no obvious solution to the challenge at this stage.
Research shows that microfibers are most often released during the washing and drying of clothing. We recommend buying quality, durable clothing and gear, keeping items longer, and washing/drying them less frequently. This practice has an overall environmental benefit and can also help minimize microfiber loss.
